<HEADING SUBTYPE="2">
(1891-1958)</HEADING>

Alexandrine Gibb grew up in Toronto, the fourth of six children of John Gibb (1850-1920) and Sarah Sparks (1862-1936). She attended the Morse Street school and Toronto's Havergal College, which had one of the best atheletic programs available for a women's private school. Following her graduation in 1913, Alexandrine took a job as a secretary for the Gibson Brothers realty company. During the First World War, she worked as a secretary for a mining broker's office and became engaged to Lieutenant Harry Dibble, but he was killed in the war. She never married and remained in Toronto her entire life.

Alexandrine joined several sports clubs in Toronto and was involved in various sports, including basketball, softball, and track and field; duuring the 1920s, she also played for the Toronto Ladies’ Maple Leafs and was a member of the Cedar Brook Golf Club. Around this time, she became increasingly vocal in her advocacy of women in sports and actively supported equal access to athletic facilities. As part of her advocacy, she helped establish several women's sports organizations, including the Ladies' Ontario Basketball Association in 1919, for which she was elected president in 1925. She was a founding member of the Toronto Ladies' Athletic Club, alongside fellow athlete and writer
, believing that women's sports should be run by women, exemplified by her philosophy of "girls' sport run by girls."<BIBCITS><BIBCIT REF="http://commons.cwrc.ca/islandora:37d69a57-6154-4c0d-9f3a-39f9db5ec8ae"/></BIBCITS> She was later elected vice president of the Canadian Amateur Basketball Association, the only woman to serve on the council.

Alexandrine supposedly began writing for the
Toronto World
and
Evening Telegram
shortly after the First World War, but no trace of these publications have been found.<BIBCITS><BIBCIT REF="http://commons.cwrc.ca/islandora:37d69a57-6154-4c0d-9f3a-39f9db5ec8ae"/></BIBCITS> The first article with her byline appeared in 1925 in the
Toronto Daily Star
. By 1928, though, she was writing a regular sports column for the paper—
No Man's Land of Sport
—which ran from May 1928 to November 1940.

Alexandrine was also manager of the women's team for the 1928 Summer Olympics in Amsterdam, which included the "Matchless Six," a group of six women athletes who were the first to be allowed to compete in the Olympic track and field competition:
,
,
,
,
, and
.
In 1934, Alexandrine became the assistant sports editor for the
Toronto Daily Star
, and during 1935 wrote a series of articles on life in Russia. Alexandrine continued to write on subjects such as women's work and sports throughout and after the Second World War. In 1951, she was a member of the press chosen to accompany Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip during their tour of Canada. In 1956, she developed the daily column
Have You Heard
for the
Toronto Daily Star
, the last she would write for the paper. She died in 1958 in Toronto, having written for the
Star
for over thirty years.
